I am trying to figure out how to open the air cleaner assembly to replace the element for a 1975 Bronco 302. It is a large unit that faces the passenger side if the engine.

1. Search for all hoses and remove from unit
2. remove wingnut from top of carb.
3. remove whole air cleaner assm.
4. flip over and remove wingnut from round air filter case.
5. replace filter.
6. reverse procedure to reinstall.
(make sure all hoses go back in proper locations)

On an undamaged original, there are also 1 or 2 nuts stabilizing the unit on a side bracket.
The bracket is bolted to one of the exhaust manifold studs, but you just leave that part in place and remove the two nuts, pull the bracket to the side slightly and lift the housing upward as James described.

By now many of them have broken off either at the exhaust manifold end, or have come un-glued (welds broke) from the side of the air cleaner housing.
If yours is intact, good on you and the PO's for keeping it in such good shape!

Thanks for the additional instructions. All of my connections are as you described so I guess I am lucky.
