How big of a job is it remove and replace the wheel studs? My current ones are too short for my recently purchased slotted mags. Is this something I can easily do myself or am I better off taking it to a local garage??
Knocking them out is easy. Getting them seated back in is more challenging. Some will just tighten the stud and let it pull itself in. I have had bad luck with that. Stretched studs and messed up threads. The only way I ever got the studs fully seated was to press (hammer works just fine as well) them in from the back. That involves pulling the front hubs and rear axles. At least you will get a good look at your brakes while doing it.
They have a splined portion that secures them. I get that lined up by hand and use my impact wrench to pull them in with a lug nut turned backwards and a washer bigger than the splined portion. Has worked for me, I've replaced all of mine on four Bronco's. If you don't have an impact wrench, may be a different story.
I think Don is on to something! I bought these mags one druken night on ebay and quickly fit them on my rear drum while I was bleeding the brakes. I noticed the studs were about an inch and the mag was an inch thick. My initial reaction was "the studs are too short".
