Rim Size & Stock Hub Caps

Have found several older Ford trucks at the pullapart, 66, 70, 78, 84. Several have what look like the stock steel wheels. I am wanting to go with stock steel wheels and hub caps for my rebuild. Question: How do you determine the exact size of the rim in the pullapart? Tires are still on rims.

I would like to go with 15x7 rims.

Thanks
Scott

Would the stamp be on the outside or on the vehicle side of the rim? I assume all of these are the same 5 bolt pattern?

Here are some of the rims I have found. Off of a 66, 70, and 84 4x4. Will the stock hub caps fit on these rims????

Thanks
Scott

If you have a hubcap take it on down there to that green truck and slap it on there. It should go on very tight. The front hub should be the same size as an EB.

there should be a stamping on the wheel, would say 15x5.5JJ or 15x7JJ

The stock wheels should have this stamp. I think 5.5" and 6" widths were common. Might be hard to find 7" or bigger. Also pay attention to diameter, some were 16". Caps might not fit the 16" wheels.

All 5 bolt Ford truck wheels up to '96 should be the correct 5x5.5 bolt pattern.

I found 3 of the old stock steel rims today at the pull a part. They were all stamped with 15x6. Do all of these rims have the same back spacing? And shouldn't the stock hub caps fit them?

Thanks

Well, by "hub caps" I assume you mean the factory full wheel covers that were optional from '67 to '77.

In that event, there will be a difference in how they fit. Not from a diameter standpoint, but by where they sit in relation to the front hubs. With the conical shape of them, the hub and locking knob will sit flush or just beyond the opening on stock 15x5.5 wheels. If the wheels have too much positive offset (like on a 6" or especially 7"' width), the hub and knob will be recessed from the opening. Look through the Gallery here to see images of Broncos with stock wheels and wheel covers and you'll get an idea.

Now, if you're thinking of going with true hub caps, the kind that snap over those raised bumps in the steel wheels just outside the bolt circle, then it really won't matter. They'll fit any kind of steel wheel, regardless of width or diameter.

Stroppe, are you talking about the caps that snap/ press onto the inside of the rim? I'd like to put some on my 15x6s but dont want to ruin the powder coat job on them. If there is another way to install stock-type EB hubcaps you have my full attn!

I'd check the forums of some other classic cars to see if there are tricks to it. I have a feeling you either have to commit (and scratch them) or not.

If you take some of these wheels home, be very careful to place the vehicle on front axle stands and test fit the wheels for tie rod end clearance. Some of the truck rims have a backspacing that can cause problems. May not be a problem on your '66, but a big issue on my '76.
