I was saddened to hear this too (sorry, jumping in late here). My mom was friends with Rod growing up (she called him Rodney), through high school. My dad was buddies with his future c0-driver, Jim Fricker, across town at Hemet High. I met Rod a couple of times but can't say I actually knew him. Lot of off-road racing history in Hemet CA.
