rock slider design

I thought I would share my rock slider design. Diagram is not to scale.

They are welded to the frame and tied into the body with recycled body bushings. Works pretty slick. Still need to add the body trim and plate the ends.

In theory it should get strength from frame and body without the vibrations and reduced flex. I plan on tying a front roll cage into the sliders too, with a bushing in between.

I like that mounting idea. I'll be building some soon and may use this. Thanks for sharing.

thx and u bet. I noticed a typo: Obviously 1" x 3" is not square.... its rectangular.

You could also use 2x6 for the slider instead of the 2x5 that I used. I just used 2x5 because that's what they had here available. I don't recall how much is sticking out beyond the body but I think it's about 2.5" the entire length. I wanted the outside of the rocker to be pretty even with the outside of the front flares. The rear flare is not as wide. Still super stout and maybe saved a little bit in weight.

I also like your design. Have you tried to jack the bronco up with the jack underneath the rock slider? If so, just curious how much flex it had.

Thank you

Not yet. I'll throw the high lift under it tomorrow and see what it does.

I did 2x6 and added tubing to extend it out 2-3 more inches, keep the trees & rocks off the body, more stick out the better imo.

Looks excellent! Much better than tubing. A cleaner look I think.

Not very good pics. Still have a few welds to finish too.

Tested w hilift and no noticeable movement at all. I would imagine with an impact (like onto a rock) there would be some deflection but the bushings should keep that to a minimum.

Thank you for looking into the possible flex issue. It looks really stout. Do you have four tie ins to the frame ?

While reading my 4 Wheel & Off Road magazine this morning I seen this article for putting sliders on a Toyota. It appears that this company (Relentless Fabrication) has DIY kits for Toyotas in different cab configurations.
I may have to contact them to see what the lengths are and maybe match one up for the Bronco. I think it will save me time fabricating most of it and I would just have to re-engineer how it would mount to the frame.

It only took me a year but I finally got around to building the passenger side rock slider. Here are a few pics. They work absolutely awesome. Super strong. Great pivot. They took lots of abuse and cant even tell. I am really happy with the design. I'm happy I tied em to the frame but did the bushings between body and sliders. Silver paint is just because I was in a hurry to prep for a trip and didn't have any black paint.

As noted in previous post - the underside of the floor (where the bushings sit) I have a 1x3 rectangular tube to stiffen up and reinforce the body. They are very stout but still offer isolation between frame and body.

I also finally replaced my rotted floors. Had to do quite a bit of reinforcement due to years of sagging, but got em done. Also built a quick n dirty tire carrier, built gas tank skid and welded in front section of cage and and.... Nothing like a wheelin trip to provide some incentive to get crap done.

Nice job SavageBurro...

x2 what Ransil said...mine extend out like that for 2 important reasons:

-keep the big rocks and trees out of the doors... and like others will say, it really makes all the difference

-is a helpful step for my wife to put her foot on when climbing in

I did this about 20 year ago and they are holding up fine...yes, tying into the frame is important and I can lift my rig up with it...I'll try to find a pic. Flares are gone, rock skis need to be extended behind the door posts to fit the extended WB, etc...work in progress...

Looks like redoing the floors really helped with access for the frame welding.;D
