I thought I would follow up on what I did. Yesterday before the Superbowl I pulled the carburetor and rebuilt it, using copious amount of carb cleaner in the process. I put it back on and bingo, problem gone. I also replaced the gaskets where the carburetor mounts to the manifold and cleaned all that up, too. Thanks for the tips here, they helped a lot, and hopefully this helps someone else down the road.

I had this same problem. The front gear on the cam wore and the dizzy was spinning on it under load changing timing. Also the ford dizzy has a pin on the cam gear. If that goes the gear will spin but motor usually won't start if that happens.
