I'd like to know what everyone's using or recommends to use for nozzles? My blaster takes the "cone" shaped nozzles (not a deadmans handle). The nozzles are ceramic and work great but don't last very long. I have to buy them in a 4 pack and in that pack are 4 different sizes. Is there another option than ceramic or maybe a better/harder ceramic that will last longer? I went through 3 tips doing a seat frame and the mounting brackets. They were really rusty in some spots.

Picked up a pot style blaster 110lb model from Harbor Freight last week and used it this weekend on my bench seat frame. It was covered in oil and had a handle mounting bracket bent but after cleaning inside and out and a blow or two with a samll hammer to tweak the mouning brackets, it worked great. I ran 125 pounds of sand through it and it never clogged.

I used play sand form lowes (the cheap stuff). I siffted it through screen door screen before loading it in the pot. I got about 1/2 cup of oversized sand from each 50lb bag. Also got a small stick and a couple of spiders along the way.....

I've converted all my blasting equipment to use tungsten carbide nozzles; they last 7 to times longer than ceramic.

McMaster Carr sells them.

I get my sand from a sandblast supplier in my area, he has a pink version of the ceramic nozzles that seem to last longer but I can't find a brand name. I'm assuming there more professional grade than Harbour freight

I use a white ceramic nozzle with a deadman trigger. I will try and find where I bought my replacements, but I have done several car frames with the same tip no problem. I think in the seven years I have had it (several years with NO use) I have put two new nozzles on it, and the last one was because I chipped it trying to get a clog out of it. I actually went up a size and have not had plug since. Never been a daily use item though; but still I get alot more out of a nozzle than you do. What media are you using? I have run coal slag (black beauty) and crushed glass through mine.

From what I have read, regular play sand is not very safe on the lungs. You may be using a respirator during the process, but there is a lot of dust that collects that can get back in the air. Someone correct me if I am wrong? I bought same canister from HF but got the blk beauty bc they said its safer.

Silicosis is common among those who fail to wear proper PPE. My last industrial hygiene class freaked me out.

You would be correct....The Govt says it's so...however it's more about prolonged exposure than anything else. Heck, I was reading it's not allowed in Cal. and that's just overkill IMO. There's is much less dust at lower pressures (80-100psi) and I'm not doing that much blasting. Nearest neighbor is an acer away kids and such inside.

I can't help but think it's the same thing as sand hitting the sea walls in FLA with winds at 50-60mph day after day after day.......same sand right and it's producing dust?

Totally agree with ya. I regulate sand mines and I don't see any of those guys walking around with respirators on? Don't tell me there is no sand dust flying around there 24-7.

You all can obviously do what you want, but being in the Industrial Hygiene field, I would strongly reccommend against the play sand, but that is me. My glass costs me about $7 for 50# which I use in my HF blast cabinet, and black beauty I buy for $17 per 100# bag which I use in my pressure blaster.

I think I got tips from northern tool they sell packs and they are all the same size.

Silica sand is very commonly used and is what causes the health issues. Most sand you get at the hardware store or out in the local riverbed is silica sand. Biggest issue with it is that it creates a lot of dust yes its similar to the dust floating around when the wind blows but your making it right there most people dont stand around in a dust storm. best bet is to use some type of respirator to prevent breathing it as much as possible.
Of course if your really not doing a lot of long term blasting then its probabyl not that big of a deal but it is something to consider. Also a lot of the other abrasives may cost more but they also tend to last a lot longer than silica sand.

Where do you get the black beauty for that cost?

Did that this weekend. Web said come on down and get them however the store tells me they don't carry them.....I've seen them at Eastwood and Northern tool but was wondering if they were the same quality as the ones that came from Harbor Freight. i don't so much blasting but would like to have a tip that lasts for more than 20 minutes....

I really do appreciate all the concerns about the health issues around using Silica sand and agree the dust is bad for you. I also understand the Industrial side of things where you get exposed to it daily and create large clouds of dust is way different than the hobbist that blasts for 20 minutes a year in an open area with a slight wind waring a respirator.

BTW, when I get my blast cabinet I do not plan on using paly sand in it........

black beauty I buy for $17 per 100# bag which I use in my pressure blaster.

Only place near me that has anything like black beauty is Tractor Supply and they sell Black Bull.....80grit garnet sand 50 pounds $28 bucks, Black Diamand 20-40 50 pounds $8

Tim try a stone supply house in the area. This is where I get mine and they have by far, the best pricing. It is more than twice as much at the local auto parts store that has body work supplies. I use Patriot blast, which is local to me so that may be the difference, but give them a call to see if it is supplied locally. Good luck!

I bought 3000 lb of Black Beauty 5 or 6 months ago for under $300, from an abrasives business in b'ham. Been buying it there for years. I can't believe how much it costs elsewhere!! Look online at Porter-Warner or F&S abrasives' prices. As for those ceramic nozzles, I'd look on eBay. You prob need about a 1/4". The orafice size is based on you're compressors CFM
