How do you all go about setting timing on a motor than isnt stock?
289
351 cam
302 heads
1.6 roller rockers

Do I set the timing to stock 289 specifications per the manual?

Thanks

Sounds like my motor...
Set it at 12 degrees BTDC for a starting point. Go + & - from there.
Really, there are so many variables involved. as long as your compression ratio is reasonable, weather a 351, 302, or 289 cam, makes little difference. With proper ignition timing, it can run well.

Typically you can set it to stock specs but it will probably need more timing. Even stock engines tend to run better with more timing. Id shoot for 10-12 degrees but as was said there are lots of factors that affect timing. But basically you want as much as you can get with no pinging and still have easy cranking during starting. You may find your engine needs more or less than the 10-12 degrees. Your going to have to "test" what it likes.

12 Degrees is a good starting point, as you advance it 2-3 degrees more you may find that it runs better, however when the weather gets warmer, it may cause it to run hot. Find a happy medium, may be 14 degrees and just make sure to keep an eye on it in the hotter days to come.
