shift rod bushing help

Spent 2 hours on this today with no luck. is there a trick to get the shift rod bushing in? i finally just shaved down part of it and that allowed me to get it into the column lever, but now i cant get the shifter rod thru the bushing. Its in a very difficult spot to reach right under the power booster.

It's tough. It might be easier to put it on the rod first then use something to clamp them together (socket and c-clamp).
