Shortening manual transmission input shaft

I’m in the process of trying to get my transmission and transfer case together. I pull my spud shaft out of the box it has lived in for several years. I slide the shaft onto the transmission main shaft and something looked wrong to me. I measure the spud shaft and it’s 7 5/8 inches long. So apparently I saved a manual transmission spud shaft for my C4 transmission! I feel very confident that ain’t going to work in place of the 7 3/8 inch C4 spud shaft. My question is has anybody shortened a manual trans spud shaft? I thought I might be able to shorten the splined end of the spud shaft and be okay. Or should I just find an automatic spud shaft? I look forward to hearing if my shortening idea is good or bad.

It can be done if the female splines inside the spud shaft are cut deep enough into it.

Viperwolf has posted about it here a few times.

I found five pages of posts using "spud shaft" in the search feature. I didn't see anything that really had the information I was looking for. I tried input shaft and didn't locate anything that helped me either. Thanks for the help though, I'll just order one, I just didn't want to wait a week for the part. Thanks again.

You can cut it off. Use a metal cutting chop saw and keep the shaft cool. I have cut them with a die grinder also but that's a pain trying to get a straight cut.
