Should it click when adjusting brakes?

I had to replace the rear brake cylinder and am attempting to adjust the brake pads. Shouldn't this wheel click as I turn it? And not easily go backwards? First time I'm attempting this...

Looks like I'm missing a bunch of crap then. I don't see the spreader bar or spring. And where does the adjuster cable hook to on top? I see mine is broke.

The broken cable is your problem. The new one will have a tab with a round hole in it that goes on the pin at the top where the two springs are. It goes under the springs.

The missing spreader bar affects your parking brake which it looks like you don't have.

Self adjust cable broken. I took other wheel off. Neither one has the spreader bar or spring.

You should be able to go to the auto parts store and get a new cable. I would also get the kit to replace all the hardware, hold down springs, shoe pins and springs, they look a little wore out.

No parking brake yet. It's on my list to complete but need to fabricate a bracket for the fiberglass tub

Sorry the pics are a little fuzzy, but should help...

The cable hooks to the top stud, wraps around a small stamped plate on the brake shoe to the top of the adjusting pawl.

Most of the parts you should be able to get from the parts store, some of them in the HELP! / Dorman section
