OK I should have googled it first and just read Wikipedia, because if its on the internet it must be true, when Al Gore invented the inernet, it was rule he set up in its creation...lol

The Ford "Coyote" engine is the new overhead-cam modular motor that comes in some of the new cars (or maybe only the Mustang?) that happens to share the same 5.0 liter / 302 designation as our original Windsor-based 302's.
It might be sheer happenstance, or Ford may have done it on purpose to bring back the good feelings of the older 5.0 crowd when they got let down by the early 4.6 and 5.4 MOD motors.
With the bringing back from the dead of the old "Boss 302" moniker on the current Mustangs too, I'm guessing it wasn't just an accident.

Kind of like Dodge calling their newer family of engines "Hemi's" in a way that harkens back to the heyday of the Muscle Car wars.
Because they are hemi head engines, and they can, and to bring out the nostalgia in the gearhead inside us. And it works

Because they're cool, different, modern and powerful, some Bronco owners are shoe-horning some into their EB's now too, so you're likely seeing them mentioned more and more these days.

That's my take on it anyway. I've been a little out of it lately though, so I'm sure others will have more to add.

Anybody know where the actual term "Coyote" comes in? What's the relationship or symbolism of the name to the 5.0 motor? Like "Hemi" got its name from the hemispherical combustion camber, so how did the latest 5.0 MOD motor become a "Coyote"?

Probably just a code name while it was in development phase. I don't think it has coyote shaped combustion chambers, although that would be kinda cool if they found out coyote shapes caused a super efficient laminar flow through the exhaust port that caused it to howl in the night...;D

Mustang, Pinto (the horse, not the bean), Bronco, Falcon, Cobra, Cougar, Sable, Fox platform.... Ford has used a lot of animal monikers over the years. Okay, the Cobra may not be Ford's, strictly speaking.

Didn't they use the name Lynx too? And I think Mercury pinto's were pony's.
Well Damn, I guess coyote is about the only cool animal name left.

Developed under the code name Coyote
"the Coyote (an internal code that harkens back to AJ Foyt's team name while running a 4-valve Ford in the late '60s)"

Ah you beat me to it. Exactly right! Ford gives code names to all of there engine programs. 5.0L was the coyote, 5.8L engine for the GT500 was Trinity, small I-4 and I-5 global diesels are called Puma..... The list goes on. Some have historical significance and others are just to keep the public guessing until they launch.

Problem is Mopars aren't real Hemi's anymore!

Yeah, that's bugged me since the re-birth a few years ago. But you gotta' admit. The marketing guys got it right on the money this time.
Of course, it didn't hurt that the cars had new and distinct (and not bad) looks, the engines had decent performance, and everyone seemed to be on the nostalgia bandwagon anyway.
It sure worked for them this time.

Hey thanks! Kind of fell off the planet for awhile.
Too many reasons to list!

Might make a good CCOBB though. That's "Campfire Conversation Over Beer & Burgers"

We just received six new 2013 F150's at work and they have the Five-oh in them. It does sit alot lower in the frame and FINALLY there is about 8-10" of space above the intake to work if needed.

The Roadrunner is a Mopar, and Ford wanted a Coyote to chase the Roadrunner :p

Lol that's what I thought, but being a bigger Ford fan than Mopar I was like wait a minute the Coyote never came close to catching the RoadRunner...lol

I was really just wondering been hunting those Varmits lately and was curious thanks for all the responses,

I like the forums here I find myself pulling them on my iPhone whenever I have downtime which seems to be a lot in my line of work...lol
