spindle nut tool question

TBP has a spindle nut removal tool, (big 4 prong socket) that says it's for a
Danna 30/44. Is this correct? I thought they were different sizes. I have been all over and town and can only find them for a Dana 44. If they are the same then I will go buy one that says it will work on a D44.. Add on question...Why is the same tool at AutoZone, Advance, Oreille, and National (local parts house) all between $15 and $20 and NAPA wants $54 for theirs? By the way.. all made in Taiwan

Buy this type. The exposed prongs slip off of the nuts and make you say bad words. The exposed prongs are made for later model vehicles.

I've been using this one quite a while with no issues and it only cost about $0.30;D

You'll spend more time & money building one that may not fit than if you just buy the right tool.

Bought what looks to be the same tool from O'rilley. At least it said it worked on the same trucks as your Amazon post. Guess what? It doesn't. It was too big around. 2.6" OD. So I went back and traded it in on the smaller one. 2.375" OD. Too small....

I think I have a part number from pep boys, going to go by there today at lunch. I have since been told, (don't know it's true) that one for a D44 will fit a D33. That seems suspect to me, but we will see..

Sounds like my 30 cent tool is winning in the time and cost department.

The reason you have to be careful when you say "one for a 44 will fit a 30" is that not all versions of the 44's and 30's use the same nuts.
For our purposes however, they ARE (or should be) all the same on Early Broncos, whether on an early 30 or a later 44. Not all Fords mind you, just all '66 to '77 Broncos.
Get a Jeep or a Dodge however, and all bets are off!

Try this one: http://www.otctools.com/products/locknut_socket_7157 and see if it's the right one or can be crossed over to another brand. OTC is not always the inexpensive ones, but most stores have access to that brand through the warehouses.

And naturally, they have another completely different name for the tool. They call it a "Locknut Socket" so if you do a search on their website to see what's available, that will pull up all the different ones.

I just purchased one the other day at AutoZone for a Dana 44 and it fits the Dana 30 too. I used it on the nuts in both axles,so yep as far as early Broncos go they are one and the same!
