i have been having trouble with the nss on my 71 bronco with 302 and c4. so yesterday i jumped the posts on the solenoid and the engine started right up....but the starter would not disengage. i quickly shut the engine down with the key. all wiring is in place as was. i decided today to replace the starter as well as the solenoid...jumped the posts on the solenoid and the engine started right up...but the starter drive would not disengage....shut her down immediately with the key. i would appreciate any suggestions regarding possible fix. it seems like a switch problem in the start position . thanks in advance for any suggestions.

You could start by disconnecting the small post wire on the solenoid and then start (crank) it by jumping the small post to the large battery positive post on the solenoid with a screwdriver. This would isolate the start wire from the ignition switch as being the problem. Be sure to rectify the neutral safety switch
soon!

You need to figure out how to start it like you are suppose to (with the key) and quit jumping the starter solenoid.

When you jump it that way, it sounds like you are ark welding the internal part of the starter solenoid or you have a major wiring issue you need to fix.

Could be a bad ignition switch. You know the trick to remove it right?

First, what is a nss?? Do you have a stock type starter or a aftermarket type?

X2 on Neutral Safety Switch. It actually is a transmission in Park OR Neutral safety switch. Should be located on the dvrs side of the C-4 where the shift linkage connects.

I had this problem once (cost two starters).....

The start wire was run in the same wire loom as the charge wire from the the alternator, This caused 1.5v inductance, which was just enough to keep the solenoid energized after the key was tuned to 'run'.
