Went to drive the Bronco today hit the key, it started, and the starter will not disengage ? Had to mad dash around to the front and disconnect the battery. Anyone had this issue ? I suspect it's the ignition switch, but not sure.
Thanks in advance, Mike

Hi,
It's possible the gear on the starter which pushes forward to initiate the fly wheel is stuck. Try using a BFM (Big Ford Mallet) or BFH (Big Ford Hammer) and give it a few knock knocks on the starter. If that's not it, its either the key switch or the solenoid but I'd try the starter first.
Good luck!

This worked for me recently, much thanks to philipmhampton whom I do not think has logged on in a few years

"not a pro but had same problem while addressing wiring issues. fix was to disconnect starter at solenoid hook up battery then turn key switch to start. then disconnect battery reconnect starter at solenoid. somehow reset the solenoid. like is said not a pro but worked for me."

good luck -Jeff

Don't "try" new parts - diagnose the problem, and replace ONLY those that are actually bad. Next time it sticks, pull the small LB/R wire off the starter relay. If the starter releases, the ig.sw. is the problem. If not, whack the relay - if that disengages the starter, the relay is welding itself internally, like this:

What Steve said ^^^

With the quality of parts today you could change a good part for a bad one and now you are really fighting problems. Not to mention throwing away good money.

Mike, I had the same thing happen to me this week and it turned out the cable to the starter had a splice in it causing a short and kept the starter engaged. Look for shorts or possible arch with the battery cables. Good luck
