Steering Flex plate coupling

My coupling connecting the upper steering shaft to the lower was pretty torn up so I decided to replace it with a Tom's part. The studs on the new plate are narrower than the old. Will this introduce more play into my steering? Can I take the old studs and put them on the new plate?

It worked. The rubber gasket does a good job of keeping everything locked together. Steering is nice and tight now.

Those rag joints can rip apart under extrem conditions. If you do any serious trail running, consider replacing the rag joint with a Flaming River U joint. Best is to go with a double D collapsible shaft with Flaming River Joints on both ends.

Those studs do nothing in normal operation. Their a back up system if the coupler were to fail the steering would be sloppy but still drive on the extended studs.
