steering wheel squeaking

So my steering wheel squeaks through all 360 degrees left or right. I am pretty sure it is the 2 horn brushes contacting the copper plate.

Is there a fix for this? Everything is pretty much new.

Tried the dielectric grease. Worked for a couple days but the squeak is slowly coming back. It looks like the brushes are doing quite a number on the copper plate. It was new a few months ago and now has grooves cut into it. I would spend $20 on another install kit and hope for the best but I can't see how the plate could be the issue. It must be the brushes on the new turn signal switch. Perhaps too much spring pressure or wrong materials.

It sounds like you have a Grant steering wheel or something similar. They use a contact surface that is little more that copper foil. You will find the horn won't work with the wheel in straight forward position. Meaning you have to turn the wheel to honk the horn. I had to buy some 1/16" thick copper sheet. Cut it into a ring and solder it over the foil.
Also if you have two brushes, the turn signal switch isn't a '66-'77 Bronco part, as they only have one brush.

Good to know. Yes, it is a grant setup and the switch is from JBG and covers a range of years / applications.

I used a hack saw and cut down the brushes. Lost the horn, but at least it doesn't squeek anymore.

Pulled the wheel and considered removing the brushes but opted to remove the copper disc from the wheel adapter instead. This way I have the option, in the future, to install a higher quality disc and utilize my horn button.

The cheap copper disc was simply glued to the wheel adapter and came off with ease. I noticed most of the copper, where the brushes contacted it, was completely worn through to the fiberglass base. What a piece of crap. Thanks Grant!

I agree, the Grant wheel mounting kit and horn button are POS parts. To bad since the actual wheels are pretty good. I finally went with a '78 Bronco column and wheel to get a good 15" rubber coated wheel rim that won't crack, dependable horn button , and a better turn signal switch. It looks like it belongs there too.
