I Have Pioneer XM radio in mine. Never really listen to CDs anymore in the Bronco. XM is sweet cause you get it everywhere. So, when you are in the middle of the Rubicon you have constant tunes on the trail and never have to listen to the same discs over and over again. Comedy, Sports, hard rap, hard metal, 70s, Alternative, etc. And 99% is commercial free.

WalMart has some good deals. I found a detachable face Pioneer disc player for less than $100. They also had Pioneer 6.5's and 6x9's for less than $75. You can't beat Pioneer quality at a discount price-SOLID DEAL!

Sharkman,
All radios will die in a Bronco. I have found the best solution to be the no questions extended warranty at Best Buy. I have taken 4 units back in the last 3 years. Each time I pick out a new 300.00 replacement unit and pay the 29.00 warranty for the new unit. Well worth it.
I have been told they now limit you to 2 replacements per year. Check your store that it's a full dollar replacement warranty, not repair. There are different plans.

just curious where you get this opinion from? why do they all die? ?:?
Personal experience. I've blown through every brand and style made. If the dust, mud, sand, or powerspraying out the interior (killed one that way) does not kill your stereo, the rockcrawling will.
Daily driver Bronco- probably not.

I know first hand that Alpine amps will fail once they get washed down. Maybe the JL Audio amp I replaced it with will hold up better. I think I'll cover it up next time I take a hose to the inside though.

Ok, time for my input.

I went with a remotely located marine grade unit.

I didn't want to cut my dash for an aftermarket unit & then found with the AC that I couldn't anyway!

With a tuffy console & a marine grade remote, someone can heist the remote & it will cost me $25 to replace. I went with the Jensen unit for its ability to play all formats, 250 watts, 2 sets of rca's in, separate sub out & the ability to be mounted at 0, 45 or 90 degrees. It can take a boats roughness as it slaps the waves.

Oh, BTW. Most if not all players skip. Whta you want is the ability to forward scan & save in memory. The longer it does that (45 seconds, vice 15 or 30) the better.

If anyone wants, I'll gather some photos this weekend of the stereo.

I'm about as far from an audiophile as it gets. Hell, I haven't even had a radio in my Bronco for the last 7+ years. But I was wondering, do any of the aftermarket units have the variable volume control like some of the factory ones? You know, where the volume goes up automatically as the noise level goes up? Seems like a good thing to have in a Bronco.

I think those automatic volume controls use the input from the speed sensor to adjust volume. Might work if you're using an electronic pickoff for your speedo.

Some of the JVC's do, or at least they used to have a few models that did.

If you want less skiping try a cd changer in your tuffy. My JVC changer never skips. And if you don't hose it down it will last a good long time. I've had two im my Bronco over the last 10 years, and the first one worked fine when I took it out, I just upgraded.

Alpine cda 9827 170.00 on ebay. plays mp3s, has this thing called mx file expander which turns your mono mp3s to stereo very clear and crisp sound. It's been in my rig for over a year even with high humidity no problems

If you look at all the guys that compete in auto sound competitions they all have one thing in common they all use alpine head units. besides it is an american based company

I could not agree more my Alpine in my BMW sounds awsome and has taken a beating. This deck sounds better than anything I have owned. But Alpine is not an American company. Japanese like most others.

i just got a Pioneer for my 77. Before I got it out of the box the Beaumont,TX humidity got to it and made it have a horrible scratchy noise. I couldn't believe it was the new unit so I thought it was my old speakers and trashed them and got some new alpine 6x9s. They made the same noise... :'( I sent the head unit back to the store because I got the 7 year warranty plan. They sent it in to Pioneer and they called me saying it will be $163 for the repair and that my warranty doesn't cover water damages. I told them that was crazy seeing I got the unit for $99 and that i never brought it outside. They said they can't do anything about it and that it wasn't there falt. I am never going to buy anything from Pioneer again... I am going with Alpine! ;D
