Does the column need to come apart and have the auto shift lever removed to install a new firewall seal?
Im talking about the lever thatbis inserted into the column not the actual shift handle itself

Yes, the shift levers need to be removed in order to install a new seal. It won't slide on from the top because of the under dash mounting bracket, and won't slide on from the bottom without removing the shift arm(s).

yup. It's the first thing that goes on. Shift tube has to come out the top to release the arms, and steering shaft has to come out the bottom. You can't win.

It's not the dumbest idea Ford ever had, but it's up there...

Im just gonna slice it and and silicone it.
You COULD install a power steering box, and a floor shift, add a u- joint, cut, remove the levers, shorten the tube, cut and re-spline the shaft, add an NVH (rag joint coupler) and then install a collapse-able intermediate shaft. Then you can could the replace the boot from the bottom...

That's what I did last week. Or I could have done it @trailerjack way...
