Day 4

Day 4: Albuquerque to Shamrock Texas, 362 miles= 1,430 done, 1,042 to go.
Today had a nice rythm to it, never a big push. Lots of Route 66 sights to stop and check out. Nostalgic for me and weird cool stuff for Walker. I was born in Chicago same as my Dad, but we moved to San Diego where my Mother was born in 1954. We made numerous Route 66 road trips to visit family in Chicago over the years. The first one in a sharp looking red and black 1956 ford and the later trips in a 1964 Falcon Sprint. If I had known Route 66 was to become such a classic of the American automotive/cultural identity I would have taken notes and paid attention. Mostly I just whined about the heat and being stuck between my two sisters in the back seat.
Today though was priceless traveling. Funny though that here it is 47 years later and the car of choice for the drive is only 8 years newer than the Falcon.

.. STEVE H I hope you got to eat at the Big Texan in Amarillo. MAY NOT BE THE BEST STEAK EVER BUT I'LL be the biggest.
... I GOT TO this post a little late but what rear gear does your Bronco have in it. I'd wondered what gear a guy would want to drive across the world .

Ahhh, we did make it to the steak house, really cool and weird all rolled into one. We really enjoyed it. Gear: 3.5, this is a really stock original Bronco.

No suggestions along I40 other than Cattlemen's Steak House in downtown OKC has some good history, etc.........I am not a fan of their steaks whatsoever though. Maybe Sid's Diner in El Reno, if you're into onion burgers and milk shakes. Your son will give two thumbs up on the shakes. There's a lot of interesting things to see in OK, just not along I40 lol. Not sure if either of those restaurants I mentioned are open on Sundays.

Edit: Cattlemen's open tomorrow, Sid's isn't.

Shamrock Texas. brings back memories. Still a dry town? Have to join the club to get a drink at the hotel. I built a Hotel in that town 30 years ago. Got a few lumps in a bar just down the road. Tex-ola is/ was the bars name. Construction workers vs Oil riggers. There were more of them than their was of us. like 4 vs 12. the lady behind the bar saved us. "She had a shotgun" in my best Forrest Gump voice.

Day 5

Day 5: shamrock Texas to Sallisaw Oklahoma, 365 miles= 1,756 from home and only 718 miles to the Super Celebration.
Oklahoma has been nothing but wonderful. The morning was as pleasant as any morning yet experienced, tail winds and sunny skies. Went off I 40 to the south to Red Rock Canyon State Park to picnic for lunch and hiking trails. after that little diversion we made an even longer one up to Tulsa to check out the Woody Guthrie Center.
I'll have to say that every person we encountered today was so pleasant, nice, and helpful in every way. Of course, the Bronco always is a great conversation starter but the experiences today were beyond that.
The Bronco gathering is feeling so close now. We should roll in Tuesday afternoon or if we wander around along the way Wednesday mid morning.

Hopefully the Oklahoma rain, hail and thunderstorms ease up by the morning for you. My wife and I have visited several of the places you have posted pictures of on a cross country road trip a few years ago.

Glad you were able to venture off the path and see some thing on your way through. Rain should have washed a little dust off last night as well!

Wow, it really flashed and boomed and rained through the night! Coming from the Central Coast of California were lightning and thunder are rare events it's kinda exciting. Bronco stayed dry (for the moment) under its cover.

Such a cool trip, and enjoying following along for sure. I bought a Mustang in Rochester NY, and the wife and I made a five day trip out of it coming back to visit different things along the way. It was so fun we talk about finding something in Cali and doing the same thing. Enjoy your trip and the lifelong memories it yields!

Oil consumption

As per the normal daily pre drive ritual, I checked the oil this morning to discover no oil was needed for the second day in a row. Odd, since I had been adding about 1/2 quart a day. I wonder... ???
I should mention the engine is the original with just 43,000 miles on it at the start of the trip, now 1,750 miles later maybe the rings are sealing a bit better. Interesting.
