Ign on, engine off, lights off = tach @ 0 light ON
Ign on, engine on, lights off = tach @ idle light ON
Ign on, engine on, lights on = tach @ 0 light Off

It is wired as follows. Please help!!!

you got me on this one. did the sunpro instructions have a help line to call- of course I use the term 'help' loosely. Are you sure that you hit the panel light wire? You have an aftermarket harness installed by the PO, maybe he got creative and spliced extra lengths of wire or used incorrectly labeled wires? I am not sure why that would make the tach zero when the lights are on, that should be independent of the lights. The other option would be to get the tach's light power from the headlight power before the dimmer switch. I just purchased a new headlight switch and mapped the terminals, if you need me to I can tell you what terminals have power when- there are something like 8 different wires on that switch.

I just installed an Auto meter tach and its funny you posted this thread . I have a centech harness as it sounds you do also . I dont have the extra dash lights on my 70 so I have extra dash light wires . I tried to use them on my tach and I couldnt get them to work either ( I think its because of the grounding circut you need to use with the later model dash lights ) anyway i just spliced into my speedohead dash lamps and it worked fine .

The funny thing is I didnt push the extra dash wire back up under the dash and when it touched a metal surface it caused my tach light to come on while I was driving around without the headlights on .

Try a different dash light wire .

Yes it is a centec, and I tried a different wire. I want to blame it on a bad tach, but that is almost never the case. Generally, if you go that route, you just end up looking retarded.

might check to be sure you have a good ground. Ground issues can really make things go funky sometimes.

If I checked anything, it was the ground. I have seen the ground make an experienced electrician look retarded. No ghost up that trail.
