Im tired of the rattling of the tail gate and tire carrier. I have been thinking of taking it off and making some kind of custom tire carrier/gate combo that I can open up to get to the ice chest Then just running a gator net across the opening to keep any smaller items from taking off out the back. Anyone have any photo's, ideas, pro's, con's ? Thanks !

For a few bucks you can replace all the rubber in the tailgate and the tailgate latch. On the tire carrier you take it apart at the hinge and inside the hinge there are supposed to be bushings. I don't know if the vendors make those bushings but 20 years ago I wrapped the shafts with High density polyethelene tape from Mc master carr and it has held up great. I dont get any rattles or anything. Look at the vendors catalogs and they show you where all the bits and pieces of rubber parts go.

Now if your tailgate is all rusted up and falling apart then I can see replacing it but not just to quell rattles.

But replacing parts with custum is good fun so go where your hear leads you.

Be wary of possible exhaust fumes you may get if you do not run your tailgate.
Just my experience when I run with the tailgate in the down position I get alot of the axhaust fumes coming back in to the cab. I'm running an open back half cab with the exhaust coming out behind the rear tire.
With the tailgate up, I don't get nearly as much of the smell as I do otherwise.
Food for thought.

x2...

I replaced the hinges with WH Silencer hinges, all new rubber, wrapped the tailgate supports and bought a new tirecarrier/ rearbumper. Rattles drive me crazy!!!! I was able to eliminate all noise from tailgate... And its nice not having the fumes and dust coming through the rear;) I would vote for spending a little time with it first....

Ok, I might spend a little time with it to see what I can accompolish. But if it wont be quiet, it going to get FIRED !! I like the bailebilt tire rack but I am thinkin of exaclty the opposite position for the tire. I dont want to eat up what little space in the rear I have. Have the tire on the inside of the rack but have kind of the same pitch to the rack but facing outward.

His rack will mount either direction.....I have mine mounted with spare facing outward.
