One last question for the night (I work third shift). It takes two hands to pull the temperature control knob out for the heater, but it slides in relatively easy. Do you think I can just lube that cable somehow or could something else be wrong? As always thanks in advance.

some spray lithium grease wouldn't hurt,
might want to shoot some on the valve
also. I have seen where some of the vendors
have the valves made out of composite material
instead of metal.. no more rust it is claimed. I don't
know how they hold up to years of heat under the hood?

Check the heater control valve by removing it from the heater hose. Most auto parts stores will have them in stock for about ten bucks.
