These dual shock mounts factory or PO add?

Question:
My 72 has front and rear dual shock mounts. Any way this is a factory upgrade or is this a PO add (I assume)?

Opinion:
I do moderate off roading worst case, no rock climbing. Aside from the cool factor would there be any reason to add dual shocks? It is already pretty stiff and I would like to keep my fillings in my teeth.

PO added. I have a spare set as well. I keep them for ballast.;) I guess they could be used to add limiting straps if I decide to fly the thing.

You've pretty much answered your own question. Without the perfect shocks for duals (all 8 of them) your ride would suffer noticeably if you already think it's too stiff. Some people don't mind the way duals feel even on the street though, so it's a personal preference for sure. Doesn't sound like you'd appreciate it much though.

You could always disembowel a set of shocks and put them on there just for the cool factor alone. Without any oil or certain other internals, they should not effect the ride.

Duals aren't really for rock-crawling anyway. They're more for high-speed dirt roads where the shocks heat up more and fade out or break when pushed hard.
That's why they came into play early on in the desert races. They crossed over to the street mostly because they were cool looking and racers did it.
There were also people who could utilize the duals in the way they preferred to wheel, or because of super tall lifts of course.
But mostly I'm pretty sure it was the cool factor.

There should be a thread somewhere, maybe in the tech articles section, about just what parts are commonly thought to, but were never available from the factory on an EB (but might have been on later Broncos).
Lots of stuff looks like it would have been factory, but was either dealer or PO added.

Dual Shocks
Roof Racks
Rollbars
Air Conditioning
Lockers (although limited-slips were)
7" wide wheels (except maybe on Bajas, but that's not really factory either)
center console

Anything else for that list? Lots of things have come up over the years.

Hey TAC, what month was your '72 built? I see it's got the later wheelhouse (wheel well) for power steering. Did you replace yours at some point?
Or did yours come with P/S and an Auto trans by any chance?

Just curious, since it's the first '72 I've seen with that piece.
I've seen later '72's come with the '73 core support, and I've heard of some late '72's coming with some of the '73 options. So I was curious about yours.

Did you post your info up in Viperwolf's thread about the differences in the cross-over between the two model years? If not, you should if yours falls into that late build time period.

Thanks

Paul

Thanks Paul, interesting. Per the VIN it was built in November. The wheel well is original as far as I know. It was manual steering and 3 speed. I added the power steering.

I will look for Viperwolf's post and add a note.

that's perfect! As a Nov build, yours is right there. In fact, in most areas that would have been a '73 I think.
Do you know if the original air cleaner assembly had the cold-air snorkel down to the core support? And do you have the dash lights for the controls?

Oh well, I'm getting ahead of myself. Here's the link to Vipers thread.
