Three Speed Column

Finally got tired of the old 3 speed linkage left behind and wanted to paint the column. Is there a need to put the column shifter tube back in or can you leave it out? I can't see any reason to put it back in but before I go through the pain and find out that you need it for spacing or something thought I would ask here, thanks for any information provided

I removed mine and welded up all the holes left from the linkage when I went to the np435.

x2 - I used a section of exhaust pipe to cover up the linkage hole.
