If you want to paint it, the primer is what holds the paint to the metal.

It prolly comes already with a black primer coat on it. If so just scuff with a scuff pad , degrease and shoot paint.

And if it comes bare metal, degrease, scuff and prime. preferably with an epoxy primer. scuffing bare metal may not be necessary if the galvanized metal has been pre etched.

So I sent my brand new gate to media blast with some other parts that were going anyway. Sets a nice texture to hold primer.

Either way, I would at least scuff and prime as a solid base for paint

Dammit man, you’re an Okie, do it right-
Take it to the car warsh, blast it off with all the quarters in the ash tray, wipe it down with paper towels, drive to Auto parts and choose your rattle can color & paint it right in the parking lot on the least windy side of the building. And you can buy the cans one at a time till you’re done, no waste!

So... are you expecting the tailgate to hold the fuel tank up under the truck??? Or are you planning to throw it in the back the next time it falls out?

#shotsfired LOL.

I always hit bare metal with 2 coats of a good epoxy primer, seam sealer then one more coat of epoxy. The tailgate has several seams that make it susceptible to rust anyway.

Not to pedal a product but I’ve had good sucess with SPI epoxy primer.
Southern Pulyurethanes. If you go with cheap epoxy on new metal you will likely regret it later.

Does this only work in Oklahoma?

I'm only about 20 miles away for the OK border and this was the plan for mine. Except I was going to Walmart. Can't afford the expensive auto parts store brand.

Be sure to give the first can plenty time to tack. You don't want to be making runs in your new high tech paint job.
