What are the pros / cons of running the shifter from the top of the case as opposed to the side on a 4speed top loader. I am interested because my shift rods have a habbit of sticking in second, thought this swap would fix the problem.

From CB article:
"Since the shifter rods are on the side they can be vulnerable to getting jammed with mud and snow. An alternate top shifter came on some truck transmissions and replaces the top cover with one that has the shift forks built in. "

Mud and snow are not a consern for me so are there any other advantages???
Anyone running this set up.

Reason being is I found one at the local junk yard and was wondering if it was worth it to pull, I would probably just swap in the shifter to my tranny and not buy the whole thing.

I believe they are 2 different transmissions and you cant swap the tail sections between them, but Ive been wrong before. Thers no room for all the internal rail parts in a top loader

you have to do a little clearance work for the shift forks in your tranny. you'll also have to find a RTS-T170 tranny out of a jeep to rob the top cover, shifter, and forks out of.

another option is to put your gears in the RTS-T170 casing. everything fits, no clearancing needed, and your t'case adapter will bolt up.

FYI, the 4 sped top loader is a RUG-T170 tranny.

the RTS stands for top shift.

The only ones that had a shifter on the top cover are the 4 sp OD tranny's I dont believe that the covers interchange but they might. These trannies are found in vans and pickups although its reported they are not as strong as the regular toploader. You might try swaping the covers to see it it works could be a good swap. If it doesnt fit you either need to adjust your linkage or get new shift rods I know some of the early shift rods were not very well bent for EB's.
