and found 31 spline axles!. when i pulled the first axle and counted it about twelve times to be sure, i got excited. i knew it had some form of posi from spinning the axles before i disassembled it. i was a little let down that it had 3.50 gears in it, but i'm not going to complain too much. i'm planning to take the third member to a shop to have them swap the gears and press new bearings on the axles and then i just need to figure out what i'm going to do with the brakes.

i need to take a pic of the differential and post it so you smart guys can tell me what it is. in fact, i'll go do that now.

Most fullsized rear ends will have 31 spline axles there were some early ones that had 28 spline mostly in Vans and 3.50 gearing is the most common gearing ford used. Why not do the gear swap yourself the 9in is the easiest axle to setup gears on.

I pulled a full width axle out of a 78-79 F-150 and it had a limited slip that looked alot like that.

That's a LS for sure.

Did you see a tag on one of the pumpkin stud/nuts?

there was one but it didn't have anything stamped on it

That's weird.
Did it look like this \/ ?
29olno4.jpg

That should have the gear ratio and if it's a factory installed LS.
It'll be listed like this
3L50. That's a 3.50 gear w/ LS
3 50. Is 3.50 w/o LS
So on

i'll have to go pull that tag out of the pile. it was pretty mangled.

i'm now reading that there are two types of factory l/s: 2 pinion and 4 pinion. what is the difference and how do i tell them apart?

Would have to see the ring gear bolts side to tell you for sure if its a LS. If the bolts are recessed intot he housing then its a LS if the housing is flat around the bolts then its open. The diff in your pic is a 4 pinion easy to tell because of the pinion gear cross shaft roll pins if it has 3 roll pins its a 4 pinion 1 roll pin a 2 pinion. I can see 2 roll pins in your pic so its a 4 pinion.
I can tell you its very easy to setup a 9in ring and pinion just get your gears and a setup kit. Should only take you a few hours. I recently rebuilt my trac lock diff again and had to reset the gears didnt take long at all.
