trailer hitch spare tire carrier?

Hi, just curious, but has anyone used or fabbed up a trailer hitch spare tire carrier? I'm not desperate to carry a spare, but I do have a brand new wheel/tire. IT's just a thought as I do have a duff bumper with the hitch. I know it would probably be unstable, like wobble, but again, it's just good conversation for now;)

I’ve used/built one. I added a couple of tabs for a ratchet strap and just pulled it tight opposite of the hinge. Made it tedious to open and close having to remove the strap and the latch. The latch worked fine and only on big bumps did it make noise without the strap.

I've always found that any of the Duff hitches lack torsional stiffness. With the mass located a couple feet above the hitch, it will want to twist the tubes. I see one stiffening plate on front of the bumper, if there isn't one on the back of the tubes, I would be adding one. That would better lock the two tubes into a single structure. Hopefully there is something structural on the bumper mounting to the frame besides the factory bumper ears.

Makes opening the tailgate pretty close to impossible.

Was it the H2 that had the tip down bumper mounted spare? Probably wouldn't have room for a gas tank with a mechanism like that.

And you already know of all the regular issues.

Not sure if this is what you had in mind, but there are several different types out there, I'm sure the bigger tire you have the price of the carrier also gets bigger. I have never seen or used one. I found this when I was looking for a rear bumper for my 97 F350 with a swing out carrier, still have not found one.

hm, most of the driving will be locally, and to car shows, like the Nifty50ees. If I were to implement a spare tire carrier, it would be just for the longer rides, then remove, but I have a hard time imaging myself and a rider removing the large tire to change a flat tire, then put the flat back onto the carrier, plus the size of the tire might look bizarre off the back of the truck. Gary(my husband) was wondering about a "space saver" type tire to put behind the rear seat? It'd have to be skinny to fit that space and it would be temporary to get from point A to B. I wouldn't think a jack of sorts would be a big deal and chocks. It's all talk at this point, but is on my mind;)

The rear bumper, someone had welded attachments on it for a spare on it, I had long since removed that to look like an untouched bumper. I just don't think this bumper would support a swinging tire carrier.

Kind of funny, but none of my classic even have a spare tire~ it crosses my mind.

My 67 Mustang there is no reason not to have a spare, same for my Triumph TR6, then my Jurassic park jeep already has a spare;)

I carry a “space saver” in mine. It fits my trailer too lol. It’s a 235/85-16. These are the only pics I’ve got of it, one of the trailer and of the actual tire strapped in the back with my camping gear, it usually rides on the roof.

One traditional tried and true method of making your spare a “SpaceSaver“ was to simply find a tire that was close to, or the same diameter, but skinnier.
Probably used to be a lot easier in the old days when we had more choices especially for 15 inch rims.
Since you already have the spare, it’s a moot point.

We had one on my friends Bronco from Hidden Hitch that actually dropped down on a pivot.
They make getting in and out of the back a little less of a chore.

Broncos look fine with 33 inch tires on the back. The narrower ones look better to my mind, but 33x12 1/2’s are ubiquitous in the bronco world, so there are lots of examples you can look at.

The space saver idea is good! I suppose it'd be even better if I took out the cute back seat since we rarely have anyone ride with us these days, but easy enough to re-install if the grandkids want to ride, of which I hope will happen often;) Then just let the large tire sit on the bed floor would work. But is nice to know that a large tire on the back to the bronco won't look "funny";)

I had mine strapped behind the factory back seat for a long time. My plan as if I ever used it with some help I could put the 37 on the roof. Not really a normal opinion lol.

I’ll have to get my computer out to find a pic. When I went to the suspension seat in the rear I moved it back enough that I fit in the back seat, and could be comfortable, the tire misses fitting by about 3/4”….. ooopps lol

That's what I thought it would look like (thank you for the picture), but I don't think my spare would fit between my rear seat and tail gate, but I did say I could/would remove the rear seat to make this happen;), I'll check this out next week;)
thank you!!!

No the spare you have in the shop would not fit there for sure. I ran with it laying flat on the floor for a long time. Then on a whim we decided to try running a back seat. We found it used very regularly, then upgraded to the suspension seat that is actually very comfortable.

I think that you should forget about the spare tire, as soon as you remove the back seat you will need it. I can't tell you the last time I had a flat tire on any of my vehicles. With good quality tires they just don't go flat unless you run over something. If you are going to do a bunch of rock crawling then yes you need a spare or two, but I can't see you doing that in that beautiful rig.
Get AAA and if you have a flat you won't be stranded. That's my opinion for what it's worth.

I was just talking to my husband about this, you're so right. We are always near a wrecker or tow truck! lol And I really rather not put a big tire on the back of my Bronco~ So, I guess that kind of wraps this up;)
thank you everyone;)

Wonder how many (if any) on here knew how to pronounce it correctly??
