Tranny issues??

I just bought a 66 U13FL with a later model 289 and rebuild C4 from a 74 bronco with a B&M ratchet shifter. Engine runs and idles ok, but everytime I shift into Drive it dies. Anyone have any suggestions? I am new to the EBs so I am just at the beginning stage of learning.

My first thought is a vacuum leak.

IF I remember correctly, idle speed will be around 700 in Park or Neutral, but you should shoot for 550 in Drive.If you get it to idle a 550 in drive but in Park the idle speed is way high, look for a vacuum leak.

Idle is too low or a vacuum leak.

Idle speed in gear you need 650 to 700 rpm, out of gear in park or neutral close to 900. cold weather choke closed about 1100 rpm.
