hey guys, Can anyone tell me what the wire on the left side of a manual 3spd does.... it looks like a ground? Just wondered I put in a c-4 after removing the 3spd and installed a new mini starter and followed the directions with it and even tried the old starter wire method but it wont turn over. I also checked for voltage at the solenoid on the fender well and there was no output.... any Ideas?? Thanks in advance... Scott

the NSS is on the driver's side of the trans and is where the shifter and kick-down goes. You seem to have the starter wire messed up if it won't even turn over. There wasn't a clutch safety on the 3-speed. Check power at the solenoid. If you don't have power at the "s' post then the problem is before it.

BTW- the nss is also the backup switch. The back up switch was on the column originally. The nss causes a break in the starter wire while the trans is not in park or neutral.

I know for sure that my c4 does not have a nss but my old 3speeed column does have a switch that I thought was the backup light switch. I will try and "make" this switch to see if it works. I do have a 77 auto column and a rockcrawler power steering set up going in next. Do I have to have a NSS? I mean other that the obvious safety issue. I plan to add one but was trying to get it back together before I dove off into the wiring. Thanks for all the help-Scott

yes, it does have the hole..... I think I may have a bad solenoid... I have power on the #2 (small) post on the solenoid when the key is put into the start position. Do you know what the single wire is on the left side of the 3 spd? It really looks like a ground as it just pressed onto the screw type lug. It has a protective boot over the contact area. Thanks, Scott
