Trans cooler Kit...

I am looking to cool my tranny fluid due to overheating issues on slow, hot, uphill, in the middle of the summer trail runs.

It's THE ONLY time I have over-heating issues.

I have " done it all" in my attempt to get this under control. This is my next step.... Then if this does not fix I'm going to louvre the hood!!

Anyhow what about this product for bringing the temps in the trans down and getting that out of the radiator?

That's what I use. I run that as my primary cooler, also a smaller stack plate cooler mounted out front of the radiator as a secondary. Then bypassed the radiator heat exchanger in the radiator. RT on this board calls this "The Canadian cooler". 60,000lbs GVWR of cooling. Seems to work great for me, even when I was still running my carb'ed 302.

I mounted mine on the passenger fender. I wanted to do like this but could not figure out how to. Did you make some kind of bracket for yours to bolt to? Mine stopped working about 2 weeks ago and found out the fan is bad. Thinking of putting it where you put it at.

FYI the coolers mounted in front of the radiator contribute to over heating the engine. I had to remove mine and now I looking at someplace under the floor to mount one with a fan.

The passenger side seems better to me. Of course I have the auxiliary tank under the driver's seat. The cooling lines are also on the pass, side of the C4 so plumbing is easier. The problem for me is protecting it from rocks kicked up by the front tire.

Do you have an accurate tranny temp gauge that indicates overheating. Adding an aux cooling fan will reduce the tranny overheat but when you mentioned adding louvres to your hood are you talking about overheating engine or overheating tranny? Adding an aux cooling fan for the tranny won't do much to reduce engine heat but maybe some if you block off the tranny cooling part of the radiator. But if you do block it then you have to be sure an aux tranny cooler is enough to cool the tranny.

trans coolers used on several builds

On my EB I use two 9TH-7A095-AB. Pulled them off junk yard F250s. They are plate units with no fins. A better one is F4TH7A9095-HA which is the stock cooler for a 96 Bronco with HD cooling package. Plate with fins and no fan (not many fins).
Even better are the expensive offerings from B&M with included fan. I have used 70298 and 70297 they are two different sizes. Look up the specs and measure to see if the B&M ones will fit. One is 3.5" thick and the other is 4" thick. They are plate with lots more fins than the 96 unit.
The Derail unit I tried was tube & fin & fan and is pretty fragile compared to the B&M. It should also be a candidate if carefully mounted with soft rubber isolators. However I read that plate coolers are proper for trans not the tube type? And tube coolers come in various designs, so some may be good for trans use.
No issues with engine cooling for a stock 302/5.0 with stock copper radiator and flex fan.
Put a cooler in front with lots of fins and no fan you can expect engine cooling issues due to less air flow to the rad.

I'm using a derale setup too here is where I mounted mine. Over the frame rail and under the driver seat. I'm not running there t stat instead to a switch so I can run it all the time
I had horrible issues cooling when it was in front of the rad I'm hoping it cools better

I too am bypassing the rad and running a two pass tube and fin In front of the rad support fits perfect Derale 13224 and into a Derale 13950 in the fenderwell on the way back to the trans

Yes, I fab'ed up a bracket to bolt the cooler to. That was the last piece of real estate left under the hood that had decent airflow from underneath. The 5/16'' cooler lines are steel, and they tuck nicely behind the grill. Just a couple of zip ties to keep them secure.

So Mark you want to help me set this up!? Ha! Teasing!

I'm sure I can do this no problem!

I'm always my worst critic and naysayer! Heh heh!
