I found brass filings in my 3 speed tranny. quite a bit. am I correct that the brass gears are the syncro gears? are those the only thing brass in the tranny? they all ( brass gears ) kind of float freely. is that normal? i'm wondering at what point do I need to rebuild. I don't feel anything wrong while driving.

Does the oil smell like gear oil (90w differential lube).
If so, that is your answer....
I have seen quite a few of the older transmissions ruined because folks put lubricants that have sulphur based friction additives in them.. same with the D20 transfer cases. the friction additives attack the 'yellow metals'.

If it's still drivable, keep driving it while you're looking for another 3 speed Don't pay for it, we used to toss them... shop door stop. RAT or RAN someone's got one for ya.

The adapter is a different length for the 6 cyl. I"m no expert for what swaps or doesn't but here's some info for you... hope this helps.

1966/69: C3UZ-7061-E .. Output Shaft / RAN = 13 9/16" long / 32-37-28 spline teeth

1966/69: D0TZ-7061-A .. Output Shaft / RAT = 16 9/32" long / 32-37-28 spline teeth

1969/77: D0TZ-7061-C .. Output Shaft / RAT = 16 9/16" long / 32-37-28 spline teeth

1970/74: C5UZ-7061-A .. Output Shaft / RAN = 13 9/16" long / 32-37-28 spline teeth

Info source: 1965/72 & 1973/79 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalogs (where Bronco's are listed thru 1979 / After 1979, Bronco's are listed in the Ford Light Truck Parts Catalogs).
