Transmission slipping?

I bought my 77 last Oct. It is an automatic with a C4. The PO said that the transmission had been rebuit recently. I was not a good buyer and did not ask him anymore questions about it. Last night I kind of got stuck when I dropped down into a creek. I noticed that when I was trying everything I could think of to get out, when I had it in 4 wheel high and gave it gas in reverse that the engine would rev up but the tires would not turn. The engine would not rev up like it was in nuetral, more like when you have a lot of load on the transmission. When I put it down into low the tires would start to turn, but when I put my foot in it the engine would only rev up about half way. Did I burn up my tranmission? Or possibly damage it?

A few other tid bits, I have a mini spool in the rear, and several months ago I thought I was removing a drain plug from my tranmission but it was actually the low band adjuster,:-[ . I think that I got it back pretty close to where it was. As you can tell I am not a transmission guy. Does this sound like I might need to rebuil the transmission? How much does that ususally run? Is there any good upgrades for a C4 if I rebuild it. I am also on a tight budget. Thanks for any help you can give.

Sounds like it is fine. The engine will rev up without the tires turning if there is enough load. It is the torque convertor that "slips". The engine will rev up to the stall speed the torque convertor is built for. If there is enough load it compensates so you don't slip the transmission. You don't want to do that to much though because the convertor heats that fluid up very quickly and accounts for 90% of the heat in a transmission. The way a convertor works is a little too complicated to go into here. But it sounds like your transmission is fine. I would, if I were you, take your bronco to a good reputable transmission shop and have them adjust your band that you loosened. That band can be very touchy and there is a very specific procedure to adjust it. They shouldn't charge you much for that little peace of mind.
