You should be able to shift between 2H and 4H while moving. Might have to adjust between decelleration and acceleration to get the gears lined up to where it drops right in. Between low and high range requires a stop and possibly a very slight roll to mesh everything up. And in case no one has ever told you before the J shifter is crap.

shifting 4x4

Mine is hard to shift also. I've found being on flat level surface helps. I suppose it takes load off axles, rolling a little also helps. shaun1300

There isn't any syncro in there. It will go into gear when the teeth of the gears line up. So while driving is generally best so long as there isn't wheel spin involved. Basicly putting a square peg into a square hole, easy enough, but you do have to line the corners up for it to go in. Trouble is you can't see the corners, they are inside the transfer case. So a little light pressure, drive and when things align, it slips right in.

Then getting it back out of 4WD requires relieving the pressure on the gear teeth. So again, while driving, a little pressure on the shifter and often a little on/off throttle to rock the gears to release the pressure. Once the pressure is gone it will slide right out.

Which way are you pulling?? If you have a J shift its just slightly down (towards you) and then to the left for 4H If youre just pulling it towards you then that may be your problem. Are you sure which model 20 you have? And are you familiar with the different shift patterns? Not trying to insult you. I didnt know when I first bought mine. But if you are sure of all that and you still cant get it in 4wd then check your shifter connection for slop, binding, or breakage. If it all looks good then try flat ground, slight roll forward, or slight bump in reverse. Everyone will say they can be a pain to shift, but not a "red in the face" type pain. ;D

Alright well pulling down and to the left worked!! i figured it was just forward and backward because i dont have the stock knob on there to see which is which. But it works and shifts smooth now. Thanks guys

Sweet! I had the same problem before someone on here schooled me ;D Now down and left it 4H. one up from there is N and all the way forward is 4L. Its a backwards J. Hence the name J shift D20
