Turn Signals don't self-cancel

Gentlemen - I have a '76 EB and the turn signals flash okay, but don't cancel themselves. What do I need to do to fix them? I'm guessing that something is broken in the column - would I need to replace the turn signal mechanism, or is there a repair?

Thanks!
Joe

Both directions?
This little cam (easy repair) is probably bad.
Those ears are commonly broken off.
Need to pull the steering wheel.

If you have a aftermarket steering wheel such as a Grant, popular brand, sometimes the self canceling pin in the wheel is missing also. On my 76 I had both issues. (missing pin and broken ear)

I got tired of driving for miles with my blinker on too so I replaced the cam. I got the part from Toms or Jeffs, I forget. It wasn't hard to replace but I didn't get any wiring instructions with it so I messed with that until I called to have them faxed to me. After I figured out the wires it was a piece of cake.

Is the steering wheel upside down? I know that sounds stupid, but if it is, then only 1 way will turn off. I know that mine didn't work for a day or so until I noticed that it was on upside down. I don't have the horn piece on so thats how I didn't notice at first.

turn signals...

okay... you guys are really quick! Yes, both left and right don't cancel automatically, and yes, it has an aftermarket wheel. My son is a big boy, and the original steering wheel was too big. I'm going to order one of the replacement CAM's from Duff, I think it's under $10. However, I wouldn't know where to get the pin if it's missing.

Great help and advice! Thanks!

Chris, thanks for the note! We may have to compare notes, hopefully, we'll both get it working. Of course, we are in the process of doing all sorts of things to the Bronco, it's an incredible experience.

This is a common part to fail. Most of us just get used to turning them off. Mark and others above covered the fix for it for those that decide to do so.

Call or e-mail the wheel manufacturer. I have a Grant and opon contacting them they sent me a new one. That was nice of them seeing I didnt buy the wheel, it came with the truck.
Really all it was is a short roll pin.

On the same subject (Sort Of), Has it ever annoyed you when you got to the trails and hit the turn signal by accident?

If so then just pull the turn signal lever off and throw it in the glove box as soon as you get to the trails. Mine was already loose enough that I didn't even need to get a wrench the first time. After that I just thread it in hand tight so it is easy to pull off the next time.

Yes, I have annoyed other people with that. ;)
I just cut mine down.
It's about 4" long now, short enough that I don't bump it (as much).

I think that's one of the funniest inside jokes about our Early Broncos. Mark R. and I were totally cracking ourselves up at McCaslin with the turn signal this year. I was actually having Mark turn on his turn signal and leave it on before he attempted a hill climb or tough challenge. I think it's halarious to watch someone teeter and totter on hill with the blinker going the whole time. ;D
They never worked well to begin with in my opinion. I pull the cancelling ring off my wheels and just self cancel. No broken ears to fix later either.

You can get the replacement cam from the autoparts store. It's in the HELP! Section.

I thought I was the only one that did that. ;D

My wife is worse than me about leaving the darn turn signals flashing on the trail. Most of the pictures I have of her behind the wheel, the darn thing is flashing. LOL

If the gap between the steering wheel and the column is too wide the signals will not self cancel. It's an easy adjustment.
