Twin Stick Position

I have done several searches and can not locate a definitive answer.

I am in the process of restring a 75. However, the Dana 20 is out of a 72 or 73, it is dated 5/26/72.

My question is about the position of the twin stick in the tunnel. I have seen them more to driver's side and other closer to the passenger side.

I will have a twin stick conversion for a AA Adapter with a 4rR0W. I am in the process of planning the console and would like to know the general position.

Thanks for any information.

It was a bit of work, but I went with JB Fab’s cable shift. You can put the shifter pretty much where you want it in the console. Also, if you don’t already have console plans, Dan Carr makes then amazingly well.

My build thread link below has pics of both but still building.

As a disclaimer, I don’t know if you can use the cable shifter…make sure to discuss with Jon. My D29 is a J shift I converted by cutting the tabs. There was one you had to do something inside the case, can’t think right now. Although I guess if you’re already going twin, my brain issue doesn’t matter.

Talk to Jon about custom bending of the sticks. He did a custom short stick for me as it was interfering with the M5ODR2 shifter.

The twin stick will shift a t-shift d-20 ok but to get from wheel drive only you have to mess with the detents inside the case. It might be as simple as grinding down the shift rod or railwhere it goes in the case. I believe the j-shift you just cut the tabs between em outside the t-case.

Yah, thanks for the reminder, that’s it…on the T-Shift you have to take a pin out on the inside for fwd.

And yes, for J shift, I only had to cut the tabs (and then shorten and drill the shafts for the cables).

I think you can still get the t-shift to get 4wheel drive just not front wheel drive only without digging into the detents. When you do the mods to make em independent doesn't it also give you the ability to put one axle in hi and the other in low which you definitely don't want to do.

Yeah, I think you’re right. And I know I could put my J shift into the undesirable high/low positions but I can’t imagine anyone doing that unintentionally. It’s not like it’s easy to shift the thing not to mention you’d also have to lock the hubs.

Thanks for the information. I still have plenty of time, but was trying to decide if I wanted a partial or full console. If the shifter position was problematic I would just go with a partial console.
