66' wagon with 289 v8 built in March 66'. Poppy Red, manual transmission, Small bearing 9" rear axle with 3.50 open gears, Houston Sales area. The 998 is unique in the 66' in that it indicates a wagon with Pony front buckets and rear seat. Is your dash parchment color or gray? Post pics when you can thanks! It also may be the earliest vin we've seen with a v8, I'd have to double check. @eaglenest66 do you have this Pony on your list?

Bronco23, if you become a contributor you can post pictures. I believe it is still $12 a year and helps support the site.
I could also post the pictures on this thread for you,. I sent you a PM with my info that you are welcome to send them to.

Thanks,
Chris

All correct Bobby! What's cool is that it is a '67 color - poppy red. Only one with this color so far. And not special DSO code either - just Houston. This is the second oldest rig of it's kind on my list and makes it the 19th total. Oldest is owned by Jake and vin is U15NL831832 (March). Both have the 3.50 open rear ends.

I do have this one logged now. Can I get the owner's name for logging purposes? You can pm me if that works. Any other pics? Dash, interior door panels and arm rest on doors and rear seat (if it has one) should all be parchment colored. Great cool find and congrats! Tim

Didn't know there was a build number or equipment code for the 66's with Pony Interior?? Is this a "new" discovery? I thought this was all muddled in Bronco lore? (There used too be a lot of Pony Interior deniers!!)

Relatively new - @eaglenest66 figured it out several years ago - maybe 6-7? I'll let him chime in on exactly when. He had figured it out in time for him to give me info to put in my book and I was writing that portion a little over 5 years ago.

I'm with the others - let's see some pics!

Yes what Todd said. There's zero about it in any Ford literature.

Yes. It has been fairly recently discovered that the 'Pony ' Broncos have an interior code that is unique to just the "Ponies". It proves that this is indeed a factory option. There is actually several things that are specific to this option besides the seats. I really like to think of the "Pony" as the pre-runner to the Sport package, which made its debut just 5 months later.

Yes, Scoop, I once was one of the "doubting Thomases" of this package, but after looking at some, I started to change my mind. Now, we have a very original "Pony" here at the ranch, and that has erased all doubts!

Now we get to guess as to how many were built lol. Can't tell you how many 66' warranty plates I've looked at over the last few years, not as many plates as vins but lots. Just the 2 u13 Ponys so far, not sure that I discovered any new u14 or u15s in all those either.

Hey @fordfan, do you mind sharing some pictures of your "Pony"? I'd like to see that original interior, particularly the floormat and sun visors if it has them. Feel free to PM if you'd rather.

I was always big on taking pictures of stuff. Unless it was important! Mostly fluff pics now looking back, and never took any of my friend's '66 U15 with pony interior. Don't remember anything else about it other than it had a cool interior and a wicked strong heater motor!
I asked if he'd done anything to make it so much more powerful (sounding?) than mine, but he had not done anything and was not the original owner. I had already figured out that you could probably put a larger motor in the stock heater box, but had never seen or heard of anyone doing it at that point.
But being around Broncos already for awhile, I had only heard of another with a pony interior and not experienced another EB that had such a powerful (and loud) heater blower. I wonder if it was just a different plenum in '66 that was less sound resistant to make the noise, but that sucker was so powerful I bet it could blow the dust out of the interior! So maybe just a better/bigger blower motor.
Don't remember anything special about the floor mat. Which means it might have just been a standard black half-mat like many EB's had. But I wasn't really paying attention to that. The seat upholstery was the cool thing.
Was there a different stamping on the mat, also with the pony theme?

This was in the late seventies or very early eighties. No later than about '81
He was a part-time bouncer at the old Saddle Rack drinking establishment and now I can't remember his name. It'll come to me...

The Ford MPC lists a '9' prefix for '66 interior trim but the description doesn't match the Pony interior, which lends credence to @fordfan's assertion that the Pony interior was a forerunner to the Sport package (which was approved by Ford back in very early Sept. 65). I've always felt the '66 Custom Equipment package was also a precursor to the Sport.
