WH saginaw pump and belt?

i just finished (kinda?) installing my Wildhorses MOAB hydroboost brakes and saginaw pump. i bought everything from WH. I go to reinstall the belt and it's too short! I recall asking sales if i needed a new belt with this pump and was told no.

what am i doing wrong here? the belt won't fit over the pulley in the most relaxed state of the adjusting bolt/tensioner.

Well, it kind of is a big deal if our information is not correct to a customer.
We do appreciate both of you being flexible and being able and willing to get a longer belt, but it would’ve been nice to have the information ahead of time also.
After all, we don’t know when a customer lives around the corner from an auto parts store, or it’s a 2 1/2 hour drive into town each time.
That said, we don’t always know exactly how something is going to fit on each Bronco. But it would be nice to have accurate information all the time for everybody!

Beautiful engine compartment Shimmy! I like your layout. Clever fix for the PCV return. Did you make that, or is it an off the shelf part?
What alternator are you running?

Oh, and by the way. Post up what belt you end up using please.
Anything else different about this engine by any chance? It’s not a 351? Does look like a 302, but I had to ask.

i ended up with a napa 25-7485. it measures 49-1/8"

dirtdonk, i'm not sure if the PCV is off the shelf or not. the previous owner did it. i would guess that it's not.

I use the same WH setup. I use Napa 25-7490 which measures 49-5/8.

so attempting to bleed the system and i'm getting a groan from the pump. it appears there's a lot of tiny bubbles and maybe a metallic look to the fluid? i'm attempting to remove what appears to be ATF from the steering box and the old ATF is what has the metallic look to it. any tips to speed this up? i never really got the big burble bubbles when turning the steeeing wheel left/right.

flushed all the ATF out and started fresh with PSF. after running the car for a bit a saw a few bubbles but nothing too exciting. the groan appears to be gone now but i'm seeing metallic flakes again.
is there a metal finish or something inside the WH saginaw pump that is coming off? i tried to get a pic but it's hard to show

How are you bleeding/burping/purging the system?
Are you lifting the front tires at least mostly off the ground and then turning the steering wheel back and forth? And if so, how many times have you done it?
Reason I ask about that is that for some reason Broncos always seem to need far more turns than are typically recommended by the manufacturers. To the tune of instead of four to ten turns, ours are more like forty to one hundred turns!
Just checking.

Not sure about anything that looks like metal. Can't see it in the pic, but it seems like it should not be there. Maybe some of the glitter is still very tiny air bubbles?

front tires are off the ground and i've probably turned the wheel 100x hahah! should i keep turning the wheel even if no air is coming out?
letting it cool to see if the glitter is tiny bubbles... will keep you posted

for reference here is the fluid right after i flushed it. after running the pump it had the "glitter". is it possible to have a defective new pump?

well i'm a bit concerned with the PS fluid. @Yeller thank you for suggesting an inline filter but should i even be seeing this kinda color from a brand new saginaw pump and new fluid? i fully flushed the old fluid when installing the hydroboost and pump. here's what my fluid looks like with about 15miles of driving. a flash light barely shines thru it!

You can flush all you want, you will never get the box fully flushed. I will never understand the disapproval of many steering companies refusal to provide, sell or suggest a filter. They are simple and work. Every other hydraulic system in the world has a filter, steering should too.
Here’s a filter that works well

took me three days to bleed with a filter. Took filter off, took 10 minutes to bleed. Plus i think I had a small pin hole leaking out of filter. Not saying it's bad, it did its job until i had some fluid flushed through, but once its up and running, I say you don't need a filter in line 24/7

i flushed the fluid from the system 3 times total due to the fluid getting this dark and kinda glittery every time. i'm thinking i need a new new pump. how can there be that much contaminated fluid still in the box after 3 flushes? everything else is brand new.
i'll pick up a filter on my way home today

Simple, it settles in the low spots and you’re not fully flushing the box unless you remove it and open it up. Every steering system I build gets a filter whether it’s an inline or a spin on. Imo it’s no different than changing your engine oil and not changing the filter.

I don’t want to push you off Shimmy, and certainly not make light of your concern. I even feel kind of the same way now that you bring it up.
But I remember the other two systems that I built, when replacing the pump with just a standard replacement pump from the auto parts store in one case, and the wholesale supplier in the next case, and both had fluid that looked like that.
There was nothing wrong with my systems originally. Just wanted to replace the pumps with new ones before I got too far into it.
The fluid looked a little dark and shimmery and I honestly just thought that was normal.
Now 30+ years on and never a problem with either.

That said, I’ve been meaning to install a filter and all my power steering systems for about that long too!
I guess it’s about time I did what I set about to do.🙄
Thanks for the link Yeller…
