If I remember correctly, the 96 - mid 97's had the GT40 heads. After that they went to P heads.

That is correct. The P heads have the plugs coming straight out and will need different headers from stock heads. Otherwise 1997 to 2002 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer are what you need to look for to do the swap. Good luck.

The 98-up PCM's are programmed to require the PATS sensor. I spent lots of money on the Moates Quarterhorse and programming to be able to get around it. But in the end I can see myself sending a couple PCMs to EFI GUY to get them flashed. There was a thread a few weeks back about the battery in the quarterhorse going dead every so often, and I need to change mine, which requires the QH to be reprogrammed. Takes a few seconds once the laptop is connected, but that laptop is now about 12 years old and slower than molasses in antarctica any time of the year.

96-01 are the years to look for. 98 & up had the better trans if that matters to you ...

98' and up will have the updated 4r70w. Late 99' is when they went to returnless fuel rail, 17lb. injectors and 62psi fuel pressure with the regulator in the tank. I like the 98' AWD for a donor. “P” heads are a slightly more efficient design, I've always used the stock exhaust manifolds because we run these with no engine mods.

Also 99-01 have returnless style fuel systems so that is another thing to think about. Whether or not you want to completely revamp your fuel lines and/or pump. Awd vs. 2wd solely depends on what t-case and adapter you plan on running. There are already multiple threads that have all that information in one place so I won't go there.
