Original spec was 30w motor oil. 80w gear oil is fine in the cold.

Viper is good, really good, I call this test. As for me I would put some ep 90 and keep wheeling.

Right here. Ran 50 weight Valvoline Racing oil (remember, it has to be a non-detergent motor oil specifically) for years and had very good luck.
I changed to a full synthetic 75w/90 gear oil and ran it for years too.
I like gear oil for it's extra "cushion", the 75w/90 because it's a relatively lightweight and easy-flowing, and synthetic because it flows SUPER easy when pumping it in, offers good protection year-round in any temperature I'm likely to see, and leads me to believe it'll fling itself all over the case when things are spinning to help lube the output bearings. And it was available without the GL-2, 3 and 4 additives that were originally detrimental to the soft materials that the bushings and thrust washers were made out of.
And because I like synthetics in applications where you're not changing the oil very often. Like gear boxes. Nowadays you can easily find standard grade gear oils that won't attack the bronze bushings, but I'm sticking with the synthetics.
T-shift case still shifts like butter no matter what the circumstances. No noises or other ill effects.

Believe owner's manual specifies, 50 weight engine oil. Has been a tad bit of improvements in gear box oils since 1966. Suggested reading is, ANSI/AGMA 9005-E02
As the Dana 20 has neither bronze synco rings, or friction surfaces, oils with extreme pressure additives will prove beneficial.

Correct. But it specifically calls for a "non-detergent" motor oil.

That's a fact-and-a-half!

Not 100% correct. The thrust-washer(s) that set the freeplay in one of the shafts (intermediate I think?) are all bronze. Premature wear there would possibly cause popping out of gear issues and the like.
Or maybe cause nothing of the sort, but they were perhaps just being overly cautious because they could and it didn't cause anybody any real headaches trying to find non-detergent oils back then.

And I thought there was a bronze cylinder-type bushing in one of the bores too, but that may be the 3-speed manual trans' idler shaft I'm thinking of?

If you have an auto trans you could be leaking trans fluid into the tcase.
You know what they say... "If it looks like ATF, and it smells like ATF..."

Might be worth pulling the fill plug and checking to see if you magically picked up some lube!!!

Yep. I do have a auto tranny. I was planning on pulling it all soon when I pull the tub to have it blasted and rust spot repaired. Put in new seals and gaskets.

My book says SAE 30 or 50 depending on the temperature. It says nothing about non-detergent. I've been using SAE 50 Valvoline Racing oil since the first change. Must be ok. I have over 270K miles with nothing replaced but an adapter seal. Why try to second guess an oil engineer? Most of them make far more than I can imagine.%)
