I'm just curious what axles people have managed to break with a 9" rearend. I'm already running 35 spline alloy axles but for others it may help them decide whether to change from what they have or not and to decide what to change to. This will not be a poll regarding any particular axle but rather just between spline counts and alloy or not.

I've added another poll to also find out what axles people are currently running. If we combine both I think it will help everyone make a more informed decision. Here is a link to that one:

For my selection I broke 3 stock 28 spline axles before I upgraded to 28 spline alloy axles. And since then I upgraded even further to the 35 spline ones.

I had to put down none stock 28 spline but it isn't for lack of trying. But when I regear and add some type of locker I will then upgrade. And this poll should help me decide. Good idea

Not a 9 inch, but I am running a 60 with Currie 35 splines. I twisted up a bunch of 28 spline 9 inch axles and switched.

dustybronco, how did you manage to break a 35 spline alloy axle? Whatever it was it had to have been pretty serious I'm sure.

Lets see --

I too have twisted up or broke plenty of 28 spline axles. Both twisted and sheared 31 spline units and enough bearings on the shafts let loose to be real leary about. ( Really, I'm not that hard on my stuff )

I now also run 35 slpine axles (full floater system). To date, it has not let me down ------- Knock on wood !!!!!!!

Snapped a couple 28 stockers. Haven't been running 31 alloys very long (give me time). Well, I did replace the stockers and then walked the pinion out of the housing with the 31 Cromos and a spool (not sure if that counts for breakage). I am pretty sold on those, no damage to the axles or the spool.

Running 31 spline alloys, haven't broken any [knocks on wood.../] I have personally seen a bunch of stock 28 spline shafts broken in Moab.

Looking at the results so far got me wondering a little about the 28 spline alloy axles. I know I was able to run them for several months and they didn't fail. I added another poll (Link in the original post) to find out what axles people are actually running as well so we can see both aspects.

I should note that I broke my 28 spline stock small bearing (broke just outside the pumpkin) on pavement.

none still have stock 28 but have 31 alloy in the garage. Can't break the 28's because something else always breaks first  %) %) %)

Stock 28 spline and stock 31 spline.
Ran Currie 31 spline after that for many years, no problems.
Now I have Currie 35 splines and I have never heard of anyone snapping an alloy 35 spline.

I think I have to change my vote (not like it matters though).
I'd classify this as a broken 28 spline, twisted actually. I just didn't know it until pulled and inspected...

Ok so I didn't personaly break them but when I pulled them out the stock axles were pretty bad and the detroit locker was pretty trashed too. So I took the oportunity to upgrade to 31 spline allow.

Yep, I'd call that broke. All it needs is a good push to twist those splines off. I had a spare that wasn't twisted quite that much that I put in to replace one of the ones I busted on weekend. It lasted from camp until the first trail. As soon as I torqued a bit on it I was back to 2 axles again. (I busted a total of 4 axles that weekend)
