What to do with the ashtray?

You kind of nailed it.
Traditionally it was fuse panels and the odd switch or two. Because most Broncos after the first couple of years had their ashtrays way over by the glove box, switches weren’t exactly the highest use priority.
But fuse panels were often hidden behind the glove box door. Some installs were very creative.
Gauges and lights or another occasional use, but I’d have to say by far the fuse panels outnumber the rest.

My centech fuse box fit perfect in the ash tray hole. Then I cut the back part off the ashtray itself and added a hinge to the remaining front piece for a door. Next superglue a couple small magnets inside the dash in the top of the hole that hold it closed

I cut out both the ash tray and the speaker grille and installed the Painless fuse box in it's place. Very easy access to fuses now. I covered the new hole with a '66 Roadster speaker grille cover.

A guy in MEB has a Bauman trans controller mounted behind the opening.
Anyone have a picture of this? I remember seeing it but can't find it now. My Googlefu skills are lacking
