what trans. is this..

i found a 351w mounted to what looks to be a c4auto.it has a detatchable bell housing like a c4 anyway...it is supose to be out of an early 80's cougar.is this a c4 or a c5....or what? the motor is complete,with all brackets and alternator,fan,manifolds,carb ,dist. It is SUPPOSE to run good, shift out ,and not smoke.The asking price is $550 ,complete motor & trans. ,is it worth this.Will this trans. work in an EB. THANKS Billy

nope i guess i should have taken my camera..... huh....I didn't even think ford put the 351 in any cars....but thats what it is..and thats what dude is telling me ...I dunno

The Windsor is easy to identify cause the driveshaft for the oil pump is larger than on a 302. The base of the dist on a 302 is about even with the intake manifold gasket. On the 351 the intake gasket surface will be about an inch higher than the base of the dist.
and Yes, 351Ws came in some cars. Torinos and Rancheros come to mind, and prolly some Mustangs tho I woont swear to it.

You may be looking at an FMX , It has a removable bell housing but a cast iron case , it is a good trans . , actually called a Fordomatic when it came out back in the 50's . I don't think anybody makes any kind of adaptors for it however . It was a common trans in Montegos , Torinos , Mustangs and Cougars and some trucks .

LTD's had the 351w also, Easy way to tell the 351 from the 302 is the intake manifold is about 1" wider than your 302. I would just guess that the trans is C4, but the trans should have some casting marks on it that would help you Identify it. could be any of number of transmissions in the early 80's

If its a C-5 it should have a hump in the pan the C-4 will be flat. C-3's usually were put behind 4 & 6 cyl, I believe the C-4 was used till 82 I'm not sure when the C-5 came into play

Well if you can not use the trans, I would say no. I can pick up used 351w motors 72 to 84 here in michigan for $200.00 in running condition. Check out your local junkyards.

What trans. is this?

That trans started out in 1951 a a Fordomatic , was called a Cruiseomatic for a bit after some upgrades and finally called the FMX up till the early 80s when it was dropped . It has a cast iron case with either a cast iron or aluminum bell . They are tough and heavy too. You can identify one by the four bolt pattern on the case to bell .

Do you have the hump thing mixed up? I have two original C4's out of bronco's and they both have the hump in the pan and I know for a fact they are C4's.

It's always possible that I'm wrong the hump I'm talking about is on the botom side of the pan. I've only seen C-4's with the flat bottoms. My info came out of a OFFROAD magazine article on how to ID ford Trannies but if you have the hump in the bottom I stand corrected. Thanks

If it is a '79, and the center is cast iron and the bell housing and extension housing is aluminum, then it is indeed an FMX like an earlier post said.

Regarding the hump in the botton pan:
This pan was designated on all ford trucks that were 4x4s equipped with C-4's. All broncos and some econolines with the pathfinder conversions had the extended sump. The deep sump is needed in order to keep the transmission pump from starving for fluid on steep inclines and declines. Flat bottom pans were not factory equipment in 73-77 EBs.
