What's the best disk brake swap from the vendors

Hey all,

I think I'm finally going to get some decent brakes on my rig. Currently I'm running drums all the way around with no power assit and 33s. believe it or not it stops decently, but it's time for disks. It does pull all over the place, but does stop. I'm going to get the disks on the front and follow up with hydro later in the year. I think I'm sticking to drums in the back. I've heard lots of thoughts on rear disks, but with e brake problems, cost, and performace I think I'll stick with disks.

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and buy a set up from one of the vendors. I don't want to deal with cobbling something together. Out of all the options out there what do you think the best system is? I'M guessing it will be Toms or WH. What are your thoughts?

That is at the top of my list right now.

Also. What parts should I get from NAPA and not the vendor? I have a prop valve. Is that the same as the WH "pressure valve"? What abuot the Bearing Nut Socket and the Spindle nut kit?

Thanks Much.

I've had several '76-'77's w/ factory power disks, but, as bad as I hate to admit it, the Chevy disk conversion I did on my '71 has to be the best brakes I've ever had on an EB, cost me about $400 total, well worth the $$$. Hard to find those spindles, though!! Looked EVERYWHERE for some, I said something to my 3rd shift guy one night about it and he said "oh, I have a '73 Chevrolet 4x4 parts truck at home, you can have anything you want off of it!" So, got lucky there:p :p Good Luck whatever you do, will be a wise investment regardless of which route you take.

Do hydroboost first. Then the discs later. Seriously....hydroboost will make a much bigger difference.

You're kidding right? Front non power disc brakes are a much better upgrade than hydroboosted four wheel drums. Especially if you are running larger than stock tires.

There's a reason most vendors recommend against installing hydroboost on four wheel drum systems.

I'm in the process of doing the chevy conversion now, I also agree do disc's first them Hydroboost.
I'm about $175 into it right now used spindles/backing plates new pads, hardware, hoses and calipers. Hub/Rotor assembly are not as cheap as the were a few years ago so I'm going to get them from my next Junkin' trip.

I already had front discs on my 77 when I converted the booster to hydroboost but it was a world of difference. As a result, another guy hydroboosted his 4 wheel drums and his brakes are way better than my front discs with factory booster were. That was my only experience so that is what I went by.

Spindles are easy to find just call Mike at Complete Off Road (brand new and good prices on both the ford and chevy spindles), he also has the backing plates but they are not cheap. A1horsepower has a good kit, but the vendors on this site that support us have great kits and customer service.

I don't do enough highwaydriving in mine to worry about disc's. Believe it or not, for what I do, I've never had a reason to complain about the factory drums. That being said, if I found a good deal on disc parts, I would install them in a heartbeat. They are a good upgrade no matter what. I did install factory power assist, and that made the most difference overall. Now off road I don't have to strain to hold the old girl back.

I put the super delux kit from wild horses and I couldnt be happier! I did not have to supply anything else, and the ease of installation was great.
