Whats the best way to hook up an electric choke on a 74 EB

Whats the best way to hook up an electric choke on a 74 EB. Can anyone post an Electric choke hook up for Dummies? Pics would be great. Have a new BG Road Demon and I need to hook the choke up. THX

All you need to do is hook it up to a switch 12v source and make sure you have a good ground.

Does it need to be hot only at start or does it need a constant feed? Any one area better than another for it to be piggybacked?

as far as setting the choke...The engine should be cold! loosen up the screws around the thermostat. Turn it ever so slightly until the choke butterfly closes. DONT force it!! It's that simple. once that spring shuts the choke butterfly, under its own power, thats it tighten screws, one pedal step and start. This video may help as well..

You don't want the choke heating up if the engine isn't running, hook up the choke to the stator wire off the alternator.

STA terminal on the back of the alternator. Power there only when the engine is running (not related to just having the key on). The idea is that the choke warms up as the engine is running. Engine not running but key on, choke stays closed.

the electric choke is a slow heating element. Apply power and it heats up and opens the choke. So you want sonstant power with the engine running.

Is the STA a White and Blk wire? Saw a diagram Viperwolf had posted and it said W- Blk Electric Choke ?

IIRC the stator is only a 6V output. What is the voltage of the choke on the new carb? While a 12V choke may heat on 6V it would take longer if it ever fully opened. For 12V I think most people use the GRN/RED wire on the voltage regulator which should be switched ignition power.

Yes. I think there were only 1 or 2 years that they did it that way in the Bronco as they came with an exhaust manifold choke stove instead of the electric choke. The stator wire is white or white with a black stripe, but my understanding is the older Ford electric chokes were 6V instead of 12V. If the new carb is a 6V elec. choke then you are fine or maybe you can swap the choke to an autolite/motorcraft one if it will fit and use the STA terminal. Otherwise the switched source at the voltage regulator is the closest 12V source around the choke.

So is what BD99 saying still correct that its a 6vlt not a 12volt output and is this purposely done maybe for it to heat slowly or? This Dummy is SO CONFUSED(electrical is not my forte obviously)!

My memory is a little fuzzy on why Ford used 6V for the electric choke instead of 12V. I think they were a choke assist for the choke stove instead of a full electric only choke which may be why they used the lower voltage. That is probably an answer that only Viperwolf has.

So BD99 just go with the Green and R wire and piggyback off it should do the trick??:? Being as the PO hacked quite a bit of stuff what would the stock chock wire laying the the manifold valley be the White and Black then right?

My 74 is missing the stove pipe but there is a hole in the cast manifold where it probably resided when it was new, don't have the original carb to attest this though.

Yes the GRN/RED wire on the regulator is the closest and easiest swiched 12V source to get to. As far as the wire laying in the valley it could be the STA wire. Who knows after 40 years. If it has 6V on it with the truck running then probably. I would verify though as it could be an ignition wire. If it is the electric choke wire it should just loop right down to the back of the alternator.

OK my wires are different colors than the diagram Viperwolf posted, could it be from different years. These are my 3 wires.
