I have a 302 bored .030 over. Supposedly 328 H.P. and about 350 ft-lbs of torque. Performer intake & Holly 570. It is cammed for a 4x4. I have WH Ceramic Coated Shorties. This will be a 80% on road and 20% trail vehicle. We don't have rock crawling down here and this thing is going to be too nice to thrash in the mud.

1) What mufflers should I run? I want tough without an annoying droan.
2) H-pipe or X-pipe. I want low end torque. With the space, I guess there may not be a choice.
3) What pipe size should I run to maxamize torque?
4) I am thinking of dumping the exhaust just in front of the rear tires. What are the opinions on this?
5) What pipe material? My budget for this is about $1,200.00.

Thanks for all opinions and advice in advance. :)

1) to each there own. Find someone running a V8 that has a sound you like ans ask what they have. Yours may or may not sound the same.
2) Space is a major limitation. Proper location is difficult to install. Just sticking one in somewhere instead of in the right spot doesn' do much. X-pipe gets into interesting packaging issues.
3) 328 HP, probably dual 2¼" pipe would be good
4) been done may times. tend to get a bit more fumes in the cab, about on par with straight out the back. The more pipe you run the quieter it will be
5) depends on how much the shop charges for labor. I would hope you could do stainless for that coin. I would be tempted to try a few versions in aluminized steel to see what I liked before spending that much on exhaust. After finding a muffler/pipe combo you like then do it in nice metal.

Check out the exhaust I had done recently. The guy at the shop talked me into going w/ this Magnaflow (2 in - 2 out) with an integrated X-pipe. All 2 1/2" ceramic coated pipe. I prefer dual exhaust over the single, especially on a vintage truck.

If your cammed for a 4x4 I'd say that 328HP number is a bit to high or the cam is pretty big. eitherway you definetly need that engine to breathe or you'll be choking it off shorty headers are probably not the best choice for a engine putting out those numbers but they are better than stock manifolds.
I'd stick with 2 1/4" pipe for lowend torque. H pipe will also help in both the torque and noise department. Type of muffler is hard to say I've run a lot of cheaper mufflers that sounded as good or better than the high $$ ones. As was said each system and engine will give a different sound. Exiting in front of the rear tires wont help the noise drone. Mine exits infront of the rear tires I dont have a fumes problem but it can get loud after driving a while but its not nearly as bad now as when i ran glass packs they were loud on the ears but sounded O so sweet going doing the road. With $1200 to blow on a exhaust I guess you could go with SS.

I run 2.5 inch pipe from my WH headers, into a magnaflow Y pipe to a magnaflow muffler

I used to have 2.5 inch pipes to a Y pipe that necked it up to a 3 inch muffler.

My 340 HP 5 liter runs much better with the 2.5 inch muffler.

Depending ho loud you want, will effect what muffler you want

You can also by some mandrel bent stainless steel tubing, to help it breath better.

If it cost you over 500 bucks I would be shocked

I just finished my 2 into 1. I used 2 1/4 mandrel bent tubing into a dual 2 1/4 in 3in out flowmaster 40 muffler (stock manifolds). I sounds pretty cool. If you have access to a welder and some patients its the way to go. It took me a full sunday but for $200 in parts it was worth it. I have it running staight out the back and slash cut it pointing down- no fume issue and it cuts down on the noise

I used 2.5" from shorty headers to a Magnaflow 2 into 1 muffler. Then ran 3" out from muffler. This is with a fairly stock 351W. It works great. I like the deaper tone of the 2.5" compared to 2.25".

Are you running headers? If so, what kind? Are you running out the back or dumping in front of the rear tires? If you are out the back, do you have room to dump in front of the rear tires?

I kind of like the idea and space savings of a single muffler 2 in and 2 out with built in X. Also if you have more pictures, that would be appreciated.

As for my budget, I have not done a full exhaust system on a vehicle since the late 1980's and I really didn't know what something like this would cost. I am going to have alot of money in this truck, so I didn't want to skimp on anything. I like the idea of stainless. It is wet down here (usually) so anything that won't corrode is good.

Here's a few more. We have the same trans setup , If you look at the first pic you will see there is very little room to run a pipe past the trans mount on the left, so running traditional duals would mean going below the crossmember. Your's might end up a little different because I am running shorty headers w/ my EFI setup. Either way you'll have to find a way around the trans cross member. I really like the sound from the Magnaflow. I had dual Flowmasters before and couldn't here the radio at speed. The Magnaflow is prob around 60% db level of the Flowmasters. BTW This setup was 485.00 installed
