I would keep an eye out for an old warn8274. On CB and craigs list. The harbor freight "chicago" winches are reasonable. Slow mind you but fairly reliable.

what makes the 8274 so special / desireable ?

Quick line speed, Strong as a horse, and Reliable...

My brother at one point in time pulled out a dump truck with his 1/2 ton 84 Ford Pick Up with a 8274.. Granted he had to tie off to a tree from the opposite side.. LOL

Another vote for the Warn 8274. I paid $300 for mine and put a new seal and bushing kit in it for about $25 bucks or so. Best winch ive ever owned.

A vote for smittybuilt here. A couple of buddy's got them and they couldn't be happier! Series wound motors and overall a good design. I know a guy that runs them front and rear on his XRRA buggy and will use them on everything that needs a winch. You can get a 8k with synthetic winch rope for $500. Or a 10k with wire for $400. Or the 8k with wire for $300. Can't be beat for the money IMHO.

I have a Ramsey 9500 and had to send it back 3 times to be repaired.. I have friends that have warn and milemarker. the milemarker is very hard to free spool out and extremely slow line speed. all of the warns are still working and easy to free spool. I just replaced my ramsey with a warn endurance 12000.
my .02 is to save your money and by a warn.
