Windshield frame mounting (bolt or weld)

I searched and found a few threads but not really what I was looking for. I removed my windshield frame from the hinge (not the cowl) thinking I would do the repairs and weld it back in place. After removing it I found some rust that I couldn't see, surface rust but still rust. It looks to me that it would be better to remove the hinge from the cowl, buy a new hinge and repair my windshield frame and bolt or screw the hinge on both sides so that the area is painted and protected under the hinge on both sides.
Anybody put screws on both sides? If so what did you use for fasteners and how many and where did you put them, any pics would be awesome too.
Thanks in advance!

On '66-'67s the hinge was welded to the windshield frame and bolted to the cowl, that had nuts welded to the under side. In '68 both were welded but the cowl still had nuts welded to the bottom. Later EBs were welded on both. The halves of the hinge seem vulnerable to rust so a stainless replacement looks like a good idea. Folding the windshield would surely knock paint off. I also like the idea of bolting/screwing both halves of the hinge. The production changes were likely just to save money. On the '68 there are 10 holes with nuts spaced fairly evenly, with the outermost holes about 3 7/8' from the ends of the cowl. The thread looks like 1/4" course machine thread pitch. The research I've done revealed the bolts were very shallow hex heads.

Thanks! I assume the top and bottom bolts would need to be staggered as well? I think this is the way I am going to go, just seems better to me.
Thanks for the response, I appreciate it!

I agree you wouldn't want the top and bottom bold heads against each other. I'm not sure the weather strip would seal as well that way. The windshield half of the hinge may work OK with countersunk flat head screws. The OE type shallow hex head bolts into the cowl could go through slightly oversize holes in the hinge for fine tuning the position of the windshield frame.

I finally got the windshield frame installed using the stainless hinge and some allen head panhead screws 1/4-20.
I have to give a thank you to stupidboy for posting up some pics of the same install on his build thread. Thanks Man!
Here are a couple of pics, nothing special but I promised some pics so here they are.

Windshield Hinge

Langester,

How did you attach the screws that go into the cowl? Did you use a plate that has nuts welded to it? Let me know, I am going fiberglass and need to attach my windshield frame to the cowl.

I am using nylock nuts and flat washers under the dash area. I thought about a plate but there is too much stuff in the way on the bottom of the dash. If I had found this problem before I primed and shot my raptor liner in the cab area I would have welded them in place on the bottom side.
It would be easy to do on the windshield frame.

I am not familiar with a fiberglass tub. The area under neath on yours might be more open and would allow you to make a plate or multiple plates. Not much info but I hope it helps.
