Windshield support ??

Ford built these Broncos with a removable top ...but to me the windshield looks as though it would be heavily stress at 60 mph with no top on. I see many trucks that use a roll bar brace to support the windshield too. My question " Is it safe to run a solid windshield on an early Bronco without a top at highway speeds???

If you want to use a bikini top you have to rig up some kind of brace to the roll bar

Are you going to take the doors off - they offer some support - to the rear but it is certainly " safer " and more desireable to support the windshield.

I ran my 72 at highway speeds with no extra support on the windshield with no problem. With that said I wouldn't want to run topless at highway speeds without a full cage for safety.

What they said. You're right that it's not a strong design, and it does wallow around in the wind and body flex a lot while driving. But even with that, thousands of Broncos have been driven many thousands of miles at speed with the top and doors off, even without bikini tops, with no ill effects that were noted.
The doors do support, but they also are just in the way when the windshield is bouncing around a bit and any new paint on either can be subject to chipping. It's just going to move whether the doors are there or not.

The bikini tops offer stability of sorts, but they also put a lot of rearward pull on the frame. If no doors, no problem. But if you leave the doors on this pull will also result in the frame pulling backward into the top of the door window frames.
Again though, many miles spent this way with only a little bit of scuffed paint to show for it.
Most of those miles may have been spent when things were newer of course, so 40-50 years down the road things like the windshield hinge may be slightly more compromised. Rust will take away much of the lower support that a new cowl used to give the windshield too. Lots of things can change.

The braces to the roll bar are best. If you have a cage, great. But if you only have a rear bar you just need to make the braces longer. BC used to have a brace kit for rear bars, while we have a nice kit for a cage.
But every rig is different, so you may have to create your own sometimes.

Good luck.

To see just how much these things flex up front, ride around in a topless, doorless EB with a full roll-cage mounted to the floor only.
As you sit there in the front seats you will watch the windshield frame and front cage vertical bars travel sideways, back and forth completely independent of each other, while rigidly mounted to different parts of the body, but sitting only three inches apart!
Very disconcerting the first time you experience that.

Thanks so much for the info......I see that the windshield in my rig will be supported .

I will be using a bikini top, an old fashion roll bar( just love that look ) and doors seldom

Do any of you have some photos of of support bars that will not interfere with the wipers for a simple roll bar ?
